Excellent all round performance earns victory

Match report courtesy of Mr Ian Garrett

A game in which everyone contributed saw Ways earn a deserved victory at Masshouse on Saturday. An excellent performance in the field, marked in particular by secure catching, saw Redditch reach a score that was probably only par on the high scoring astroturf, and Ways raced to success with Ian Garrett playing the main innings, but with a contribution from every batter.

Redditch won the toss and batted on a hot afternoon, and got off to a rapid start, with opener Little slogging his way to a fifty. More than once he was lucky with mistimed shots that landed in no man’s land, or on one occasion, skipper for the day Ian Garrett reached right handed but could not cling on to at a deep mid on, but he also hit the ball with impressive power. The fifty was up within the first twelve overs, with one wicker for Lucy Hardy who induced a chip to James White at square leg. Steve Moore then bowled a typical spell, bowling his eight overs through for just 23, and taking the second wicket when one popped off a length for Mayo to glove to Sabir at slip. Little continued to swing the bat and reached his fifty with a brace of leg side boundaries from Hannah Murray, but Hannah had her revenge in the same over with a well-pitched up delivery that struck the stumps and dismissed Little for 52 with the score 71-3.

Zoheeb Ahmed then came on to bowl a canny spell of wrist spin from the top end, and struck in his first over when two leg breaks were followed by the straight one that won an LBW decision, producing an exuberant celebration, followed on two further occasions as Zoheeb induced catches chipped to mid-on and cover. Bryan Varley bowled a tidy spell replacing Steve, and took perhaps the crucial wicket – Redditch captain Neville Mason, who made a combative century against Ways in 2018, struck his first delivery from Bryan confidently over mid-on for four, but in trying to repeat the shot next ball, got a leading edge which was superbly caught by Hannah Murray at a deep mid-on. Hannah not only took the catch but narrowly managed to avoid flooring Sabir who was coming in from mid-off at the same time. Mustafa made 35 and carried the later stages of the Redditch innings, until the returning Lucy Hardy snared him aided by an acrobatic catch by Zoheeb at backward point, and Raj and Mahmood struck boundaries and ran with urgency in the last few overs, although Raj fell to James White in the final over, Sabir taking his third catch of the innings.

So 190 did not seem an excessive target, although it would take a good innings from someone to break the back of such a target. That someone proved to be Ian Garrett, who apparently auditioning for the IPL, and enjoying the opening bowler’s tendency to both drop short and over step, struck the first three deliveries of the innings for four, and followed this by two more boundaries pulled over square leg in the next over. 23 on the scoreboard in the first two overs and Laura Hill yet to face a ball. Laura joined in with boundaries through the slips and through mid-wicket, no balls and free hits offered more opportunities to cash in, and the fifty was up in the fifth over. Another short delivery saw Ian slash to the third man boundary again, and when Laura fell, this time picking out mid-wicket, at the end of the sixth over, the score was already 60, and Ways could afford a few quiet overs, so far in front of the rate was the innings. In fact, although young spinner Adam Mohammed was to bowl an effective spell from the top end, the rate hardly dropped. Zoheeb at three kept the run rate charging on with a breezy 22 from 17 balls, striking opener Mehmood for two off-side fours in his final over, then launching a short ball from Blaynee over fine leg for six. At the end of ten overs, the score stood at 90-1. Mohammed deceived Zoheeb with a top spinner, but Steve Moore added a further thirty with Ian, Ian going to fifty when Mohammed strayed down the leg side and was swung away to the leg side boundary, the landmark thus reached with his eighth four. Ian settled into pushing singles, the deep point set for the incredibly slow Blaynee allowing a run for almost every shot, and Steve used his power to lever over the leg-side until deceived by Mohammed and caught in the outfield (125-3 from 17).
Jonathan Gregory now played himself carefully, and Ian continued to push singles and twos, but the innings wobbled in the mid-140s, when the lack of pace of Blaynee induced an outside edge from Ian, well caught by keeper Little (145-4, Ian dismissed for 70 from 68 balls), and then had Jonathan chip a return catch. 148-5 and another quick wicket could have seen Ways throw away a match that had seemed under control. Fortunately, Sabir struck powerfully, including a six that just cleared the diminutive Mohammed on the boundary, and when he fell for 16, Ways were just 17 short. James White had already batted with maturity, and he now took charge, combining solid defence with powerful shots through both off and leg side to the short delivery.

In the 31st over, the scores were level, and Hannah Murray’s swept boundary from Oakley completed a four wicket victory with overs to spare.
So, reward for an excellent performance. Everyone contributed, with bat or ball or in the field. Ground fielding and catching were especially impressive in the context of 3rd XI cricket where often they are not, all bowlers stuck at their task well, with Lucy, Steve and Zoheeb the stand-out performers, and everyone contributed with the bat, giving Ian the necessary support. This was a performance that should take the 3rds forwards with confidence to the games in coming weeks.
