Batting diligence sets up great bowling display

The 1’s travelled to Stourport CC on Saturday hoping to pick up where they left off before the poor weather of the last two weeks put a halt to their chances of a good run of form going into the midpoint of the season. The ground looked in good shape considering its proximity to the river Severn, with a lush outfield and a beautiful looking white track that possibly hid some surprises as it was still quite soft. Skipper Jon Bassett lost the toss for the first time in a while, and it was not too surprising when the home side asked Ways to bat first.
James Hamilton and Chris Curtis, now the preferred opening partnership started very steadily against a mix of medium pace from the hosts, with the ball keeping very low on the slow pitch that offered the bowlers a little lateral movement. Stourport’s change bowlers continued in the same vein, and though Ways were not losing wickets, the opening pair were struggling to push the scoring rate on as they both struggled with their timing against the accurate bowling. They’d just reached the century partnership however, when Hamilton, aware that the run rate was an issue, tried to force off spinner Parry away, and played the wrong line to be bowled one run short of a half century. With the opening partnership broken, Ways then went into freefall when Stourport skipper Bryan bought himself on. An extraordinary first over saw the medium pacer bowl several wides, a front foot no ball which resulted in a free hit that bowled Curtis at the cost of a bye, AND three wickets! First to go was Curtis, caught playing a loose shot, followed by Usmaan Mahmood, clean bowled, and finally Sukhraj Gill, plum LBW as he shuffled in front of his stumps. This seemed to signal panic stations in the visitors, as their innings crumbled to the point where they unbelievably may have been bowled out inside their allotted 50 overs. David Potter got a leading edge back to Roberts, Zafron Ahmed mistimed a shot and was also caught out, as was Tony Potter, which left Bassett and James East at the crease with five overs remaining and only one more batsman in the shed. However, a fine display of running and the occasional lusty blow saw the pair put on a decent little cameo knock to finish the innings at 197-8.
Ways were aware that they would have to bowl well on a pitch that had eased slightly since the start of the match, yet still had enough on offer to reward the bowlers if they kept to the plan. The tried and trusted partnership of Sameer Khan and Bassett got things underway, with Khan taking his customary early wicket, Edwards bowled without scoring. The hosts then put on a decent little stand, progressing slowly whilst seeing off Khan’s first spell as Bassett bowled through his full allocation of 10 overs. Zaf Ahmed’s left arm spin was introduced at one end, whilst East replaced Bassett at the other. This proved to be the game changers, as Ahmed’s flight and guile and East’s mix of seam and cutters blew the Stourport middle order away. Cook was bowled by Ahmed, and East took a fine return catch to dismiss Bailey for a duck. Ahmed got Colley to nick off to Dave Potter behind the stumps, and East also had Lockwood caught at square leg by Gill and Bryan caught at shortish mid wicket by Bassett. The latter then produced the ball of a lifetime to bowl the remaining set batsman, Parry, for 36 with one that swung in, pitched on middle and leg, and left the batsman to whip the off bail from the top of the stumps. Stourport still had gun batsman Moss at the wicket however, and he was still capable of winning the game for the hosts despite a hand injury picked up when keeping hampering him slightly. Bassett decided to hold back East in case the game went to the death overs and introduced Curtis and Iain Wingfield to see if they could keep it tight and maybe nick out the remaining wickets. Curtis took no time in joining the carnage either, Tony Potter taking an excellent tumbling catch on the run to get rid of Moss. The game was soon in the bag too, as Curtis dismissed Neill before Wingfield finished off proceedings by forcing last man Roberts to play on, the hosts all out for 105.
A display that had ups and downs, but inevitably proved worthy of the win against a strong Stourport side that will have been surprised by the fighting spirit shown by the visitors.
