Dysmal Display On Dreary Day

Fielding woes return to haunt Ways

After a week of heavy rain, there was no surprise when skipper Alan Dabbs decided to field first on winning the toss against Avoncroft CC. Sabir Ahamedzah got Ways off to the perfect start too, when he had Pitt adjudged LBW with the opening ball of the game. He then dismissed Brunt shortly after, taking a simple return catch. Then, with Josh Cound on 10, Amir Hemraj dropped a fairly easy chance off Lewis Taylor at cover point, and this proved to be the pivotal moment of the match. Ahamedzah was replaced by Iain Wingfield, and he continued his fine form with the ball, reeling off 9 overs and picking up 1-24 with some tight bowling. Dabbs had replaced Taylor at the shed end, but by this time Cound had more than got his eye in, striking the ball ferociously. Dabbs, carrying a shoulder strain, proved relatively ineffective, despite picking up the wicket of White, with some poor fielding helping Cound to his century. Bennett joined Cound, and the pair took Avoncroft past the 200 mark, before Dave Kendall bowledd Bennett for 37. However, Cound simply destroyed the bowling in the latter overs to finish unbeaten on 147, as the visitors racked up 235-5 off their 45 overs.
Rain during the first innings meant that Ways were left 37 overs in which to chase a revised total of 218, but they got off to a bad start when Hemraj was out in the first over, caught by bowler Martyn Cound for 4. Steve Moore was then bowled by Pittam, seemingly mesmerised, and left in several minds as to which shot to play. Choosing 'none' was not the correct option though! Chris Jones joined Wingfield, but with them looking to settle the innings down, Jones inexplicably set off for a run, having top edged the ball all of five yards, just short of the fielder at short fine leg. Despite a resounding "Stay there!!" from Wingfield, he continued up the wicket, meeting his partner at the other end. By now, the fielder had the ball in hand, and with the certainty of a run out, Wingfield sacrificed himself for the quicker scoring Jones, and made the long, angry walk back to the pavilion. It was drizzling again by now, so Ways went in search of quick runs, as they were well behind the required rate, with the probability of enough overs to constitute a game inevitable. Chris Webber succumbed for 10, then Naqeeb Majid picked up a second successive duck. By the time Kendall had come to the wicket, the weather had closed in sufficiently to abandon play for the remainder of the day, with sufficient overs having been bowled to give Avoncroft the win.
A catalogue of errors in a well below par display from the hosts, Ways will need to sort themselves out in time for next week's home game against Bartestree & Lugwardine CC
